Target Areas/Programs

The PUBLIC BENEFITS PROGRAM will target the public health needs of the API community in the Sacramento Valley Region. The realm of public health care needs includes Medi-Cal, Medicare, or Social Security benefits and direct access to health care, including general acute care, long-term care, mental health or general counseling, and disability benefits.

The HOUSING PROGRAM will host educational seminars and legal clinics on landlord/tenant issues, which focus on providing information and legal assistance in a language appropriate context. Focus may pertain to recent legal developments, such as mold-infested living conditions.

The EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM's target is to provide assistance in obtaining unemployment insurance benefits for qualified persons as well as to conduct educational programs on obtaining small business loans or tax filing to those self-employed members of the Asian and Pacific Islander community. We will also provide assistance to disabled persons who require reasonable accommodation to perform work.

The CHILDREN'S PROGRAM will provide counseling and assistance to families that have interfaced with the public welfare system. ALSO will provide clinics on how to regain custody of children removed from the home, obtaining legal guardianship, school suspensions and expulsions, and special education.

COALITION BUILDING is an important long-term goal for ALSO. We would like to create a database networking system that allows various community organizations to conduct an intake on a client and cross-refer that client to the appropriate community agencies. ALSO recognizes that one organization may not meet all of the individual needs of a client, but may need a variety of services in different areas. This network allows agencies to provide immediate referrals, taking advantage of the technology available. Ultimately, the database may be utilized to create statistical compilation and research on identifying community needs and how they are met or continue to grow.

Asian Legal Services Outreach strives to meet the needs of the Asian and Pacific Islander community through coordinating efforts in outreach, education and advocacy by providing legal services, educational programs, and building coalitions.
